Radical Acceptance
Radical acceptance (a core concept of DBT) means accepting reality exactly as it is in this moment—without judging it or fighting against it. Pain is inevitable, but suffering is created by resisting the pain.
1. What Acceptance is Not
Acceptance does not mean you approve of a situation, give up, or become passive. It is merely acknowledging the facts.
2. The End of 'It Should Be Different'
Let go of thoughts like 'This isn't fair' or 'This can't be happening'. These thoughts keep you trapped in suffering.
3. Involving the Body
Resistance often shows up physically through tension. Pay attention to your posture and consciously try to relax your muscles as you accept reality.
4. Making the Choice
Acceptance is a conscious decision that you have to make over and over again—especially when strong emotions arise.
5. Creating Space for Change
Paradoxically, radically accepting the situation is often the first necessary step to initiating effective change.
